The 50/30/20 budget rule, explained simply.

The 50/30/20 rule is one of the simplest ways to split your income across everything you need, everything you want, and everything you're building toward. Here's how it works — and how to set it up in BudgetIT Pro in about two minutes.

What the rule says

Take your monthly take-home income and divide it into three buckets:

  • 50% Needs — rent, utilities, groceries, transport, minimum debt repayments, insurance. If you'd struggle to skip it, it's a need.
  • 30% Wants — eating out, streaming, hobbies, weekend plans, upgrades. Nice to have, not required.
  • 20% Savings & debt payoff — emergency fund, investments, extra debt payments beyond the minimums.

Why it works

The rule forces two things most budgets skip: a hard ceiling on wants, and a non-negotiable floor for savings. It's flexible enough to fit almost any income and simple enough to remember without a spreadsheet.

It's also a good starting point when you have no idea where your money goes. Once you've lived with the split for a month or two, you'll see which bucket squeezes you most — and that's the signal to tune the percentages.

Set it up in BudgetIT Pro

  1. Open the Budget Planner and enter your monthly income at the top.
  2. Turn on rent, insurance, or school fees as sinking funds if they apply — the planner subtracts them from your available pool first.
  3. Set your Essentials categories (Feeding, Utilities, Transport, Debt) to add up to 50%. Lock the ones you want to hold steady.
  4. Set Non-essentials (Me Money, Entertainment, Gifts) to add up to 30%.
  5. Push Savings, Investments, and Tithe to the remaining 20%.

Every percentage you edit rebalances the rest live — you'll always land at exactly 100%.

When to tweak the ratios

  • High cost of living? Try 60/20/20 while you stabilise, then rebalance.
  • Aggressive debt payoff? 50/20/30 pushes more into savings/debt.
  • Building an emergency fund? Bump savings to 30% for 3 months, then rebalance.

Try it in the planner

The fastest way to see if 50/30/20 fits your life is to plug your real income into the planner and watch it rebalance.
